In addition to these California organizations and charities that can provide you aid and help, there are also state government run assistance programs available.

Alameda Power & Telecom

Energy Assistance through Supportive Efforts (EASE) is a one time emergency assistance grant of up to $200 that is paid when a families electric bill is in arrears.

 

Anaheim Public Utilities Department
One-time emergency cash grant to be used for bill paying assistance.

 

Burbank Water and Power
Project Share helps families in Burbank that are experiencing temporary financial difficulties due to sudden illness, unemployment, and other unexpected hardships.

 

CARE Program (California Alternate Rates for Energy)
The CARE program will provide a 20% discount on the monthly gas bill for qualified households. In addition, you may be eligible to receive a $15 discount on the Service Establishment Bill/Charge. You can receive your discount after your completed application is approved by your gas company.

 

Energy Assistance Fund (EAF) and Gas Assistance Fund (GAF)
The United Way administers the GAF and EAF assistance / charity assistance program. They will provide help with bills up to $100.00 for EAF and up assistance of up to $100.00 for GAF. Residents are only eligible for this electric bill aid once per year.

 

Eyeglasses and exams
Optometrists across California provide the low income and uninsured with free or low cost vision care and prescription glasses. More on California free eye care and glasses.

 

Father Joe's Villages
This charity organization provides programs such as job training, education, child care, medical and dental care assistance.

 

Glendale Water & Power 
Helping Hand assists customers with maintaining electric service by providing up to $150 one-time cash grant.

 

Imperial Irrigation District

Avoid service disconnections with aid from the Emergency Energy Assistance Program

 

Jewish Vocational Service (JVS)
Helps people in the greater Los Angeles area, of all religions, who are looking for work, seeking career advancement or if the individual is interested in better managing their work environment.

Get advice, consultation, and no cost legal tips from law firms and attorneys throughout California.

 

Los Angeles Department of Water and Power


Project Angel helps customers meet both their water and energy needs.

 

Mama's Kitchen
Provides free food and groceries women, men and children whose lives have been devastated by a life-threatening illness.

 

Meet Each Need with Dignity (MEND)
MEND provides clothing, emergency food, medical, dental, and vision care, job skills training and job placement aid.

 

Pacific Gas and Electric
Relief for Energy Assistance through Community Help (REACH) provides assistance with energy bills to families in California.

 

Pacific Power
Project HELP is an energy assistance programs for California residents.

 

Palo Alto Utilities


One-time annual emergency cash grant for bill paying assistance from Project PLEDGE

 

Pasadena Water and Power

 

Project A.P.P.L.E., which stands for Assisting Pasadena People with Limited Emergencies, provides one time assistance of up to $150.

 

Redding Electric Utility and Riverside Public Utilities


Shares provides bill paying assistance.

 

Sacramento Municipal Utility District


EnergyHELP provides energy bill assistance.

 

Samaritan House
Services offered to those in need of help include clothing, case management, dental and medical care, food and groceries, shelter, employment assistance and training, and food and toys for the holidays

 

San Diego Gas and Electric
The Neighbor to Neighbor program helps customers in California who do not qualify for any other assistance programs but can't pay their SDG&E electric or heating bill due to temporary financial hardship such as a job loss or a family illness.

 

Sierra Pacific Power Company
Special Assistance Fund for Energy (S.A.F.E.) a low-income, energy aid program.

 

Society of St. Vincent de Paul
Provides direct assistance and grants to families and individuals in need. The SVdP organization provides tangible assistance to persons in need in California through person-to-person contact.

 

Southern California Edison
Energy Assistance Fund (EAF) is an energy bill assistance fund that was created to help those in need pay their winter heating bills.

 

Southern California Gas Company
SoCal Gas offers the Gas Assistance Fund, which enables qualifying customers to receive financial help in paying their heating and gas bills.

 

Southwest Gas
Energy Share is an emergency fund which provides direct cash grants and aid to qualified people who are facing unexpected financial difficulties, such as a medical emergency or the loss of a job.

 

St. Vincent de Paul Society of Marin County and San Mateo County 
Provides assistance to help those in need obtain nutritious food, affordable housing, meaningful employment, utility bill help, and other aid.

 

Ukiah
