Motivations involved in serial killings are fears of rejection, power, and perfection. Serial killers tend to be insecure, and irrationally scared of rejection. He will try to avoid developing a painful relationship with his object of desire and is terrified of being abandoned, humiliated, or exposed. Many killers often have sex – the ultimate form of intimacy – with their victims, and often with the corpse. That way, the possibility of rejection is null. Serial killers also enjoy prolonging the suffering of their victims as it gives them a sense of power over the victim. They get to decide whether, and how, the victim will live or die.

They have a belief that “the power to cause pain is the only power that matters, the power to kill and destroy, because if you can’t kill you are always subject to those who can” (Card). Killing is usually the only way they can achieve those feelings of empowerment. Fears of rejection and power are major themes of most serial killings, but perfection plays a role in some cases. Some killers seek to “improve” something. They often see a category of people, such as women or prostitutes, as “unclean”, and see their removal of those beings as improving the world. Or, they think that killing the victim, usually in some sort of a ritualistic manner, redeems the victim their wrongdoings. In that case, the killer is a special being and the victim is “chosen” and should be grateful. They often find the victim’s ingratitude infuriating, though unfortunately foreseeable (Lester).

Serial killers must continuously kill simply because they are addicted to the feelings they get when they do. They also rationalize every aspect and detail of their behavior so there is no reason in their head as to why they should stop. They know what they’re doing, the consequences of their actions, and how to avoid getting caught. Most serial killers, and psychopaths in general, are “consummate chameleons” who are able to hide their rage and true intentions behind a charismatic, civilized façade called the “mask of sanity” (Newton). Psychopaths are amoral and though they knowing the difference between right and wrong, they do not care and lack feelings of remorse or guilt. They tend to objectify other people and treat them as if they were objects. They don’t know how to have sympathy for others because of their psychopathic nature, but they do know how to simulate it by observing others.

Most serial killers are highly charming and persuasive, but it is only a manipulative act designed to lure victims into a trap. Their killings are material symptoms of the combination of their lifelong habits and personal motivations and fears. Though those factors are not excuses for hurting others, they are interesting explanations and provide fascinating insight on the killers’ minds.

A serial killer is a person who murders three or more people, usually due to abnormal psychological gratification, with the murders taking place over more than a month and including a significant break (a "cooling off period") between them. Some sources, such as the FBI, disregard the "three or more" criterion and define the term as "a series of two or more murders, committed as separate events, usually, but not always, by one offender acting alone". Although psychological gratification is the usual motive for serial killing, and most serial killings involve sexual contact with the victim, the FBI states that the motives of serial killers can include anger, thrill, financial gain, and attention seeking.The murders may be attempted or completed in a similar fashion and the victims may have something in common: race, appearance, sex, or age group, for example. Serial killing is not the same as mass murdering, nor is it spree killing, in which murders are committed in two or more locations in a short time. However, cases of extended bouts of sequential killings over periods of weeks or months with no apparent "cooling off period" or "return to normalcy" have caused some experts to suggest a hybrid category of "spree-serial killer".

Serial Killers – The Most Important Characteristics -

They tend to be smart, with a mean IQ of “bright normal.”
Despite their intelligence, they do poorly in school, have spotty employment records, and generally end up as unskilled workers.
They come from deeply troubled families. Typically, they have been abandoned at an early age by their fathers and grow up in broken homes dominated by their mothers.
There is a long history of psychiatric problems, criminal behavior, and alcoholism in their families.
As children, they suffer significant abuse-sometimes psychological, sometimes physical, often sexual. Such brutal mistreatment instills them with profound feelings of humiliation and helplessness.
Because of their resentment toward their distant, absent, or abusive fathers, they have a great deal of trouble with male authority figures. Because they were dominated by their mothers, they have a powerful hostility toward women.
They manifest psychiatric problems at an early age and often spend time in institutions as children.
Because of their extreme social isolation and a general hatred of the world and everyone in it (including themselves), they often feel suicidal as teenagers.
They display a precocious and abiding interest in deviant sexuality and are obsessed with fetishism, voyeurism, and violent pornography.

There are three more important characteristics-behavioral red flags-often referred to as psychopathological traid. And those are:

Bed-Wetting – enuresis

There’s nothing unusual or alarming about bed-wetting in itself; it’s a common phenomenon among little children. When the problem persists into puberty, however, it may well be a sign of significant and even dangerous emotional disturbance. According to the findings of the FBI’s Behavioral Science Unit, fully 60 percent of sex-murderers were still suffering from this condition as adolescents-like the African-American serial killer Alton Coleman, who wet his pants so often that he was saddled with the taunting nickname “Pissy.”
Fire-Starting – pyromania

Given their lust for destruction, it’s no surprise that, among their other twisted pleasures, many serial killers love to set fires, a practice they often begin at an early age. Some of the most notorious serial killers of modern times were juvenile arsonists. Ottis Toole, for example-Henry Lee Lucas’s loathsome accomplice-began torching vacant houses when he was six years old. Carl Panzram -arguably the most unrepentant killer in the annals of American crime-took positive pride in the havoc he could wreak with a matchstick, boasting in his jailhouse memoirs that, at the tender age of twelve, he caused $100,000 worth of damage by burning down a building at reform school. Carlton Gary firebombed a grocery store while still in his teens. And David Berkowitz-who ultimately confessed to more than fourteen hundred acts of arson-was so obsessed with fires as a little boy that his schoolmates nicknamed him “Pyro.”
Animal Torture – precocious sadism

Juvenile sadism directed at lower life-forms is nothing new. There have always been children and adolescents (usually male) who enjoy hurting small creatures. Certainly Shakespeare knew about such things. InKing Lear, he writes about “wanton boys” who pull the wings off of flies for “sport.” And in Mark Twain’sAdventures of Huckleberry Finn, the hero finds himself in a one-horse town where a bunch of young loafers are amusing themselves by tying a tin pan to the tail of a stray dog and watching him “run himself to death.”

In the last few hours prior to his widely-publicized execution for the murder of as many as 50 young women and girls from Utah, Washington, Idaho, Colorado and Florida, the serial killer asked Christian psychologist James Dobson to visit him at the Florida State Prison. Bundy had corresponded with Dr. Dobson - a former member of President Reagan's Commission on Pornography - for two years prior to their meeting. While anxious reporters waited outside, Bundy told Dobson about the influence of pornography on his behavior.

Bundy said he began casually reading soft-core pornography when he was 12 or 13 years old. His friends found pornographic books in the garbage cans in his neighborhood: "(F)rom time to time we would come across pornographic books of a harder nature ... a more graphic, explicit nature than we would encounter at the local grocery store," he told Dobson in the taped interview. "But slowly throughout the years reading pornography began to become a deadly habit.

"My experience with pornography ... is once you become addicted to it, (and I look at this as a kind of addiction like other kinds of addiction), I would keep looking for more potent, more explicit, more graphic kinds of material. Like an addiction, you keep craving something that is harder, something which gives you a greater sense of excitement. Until you reach a point where the pornography only goes so far, you reach that jumping off point where you begin to wonder if maybe actually doing it would give you that which is beyond just reading or looking at it."

Within a few years, those latent desires fueled by pornography were expressed through his first murder. Although Bundy said he did not blame pornography, he explained that pornographic materials shaped and molded his behavior. He also warned the nation that "the most damaging kinds of pornography ... are those that involve violence and sexual violence. Because the wedding of those two forces, as I know only too well, brings out the hatred that is just, just too terrible to describe."

Bundy said that pornography "snatched me out of my home 20, 30 years ago ... and pornography can reach out and snatch a kid out of any house today." His religious training and morality initially restrained him from acting out his fantasies, but he confessed that finally, "I couldn't hold back anymore."

Alcohol supposedly broke the restraints for him to commit his first murder. "What alcohol did in conjunction with exposure to pornography is (sic) alcohol reduced my inhibitions at the same time the fantasy life that was fueled by pornography eroded them further."

While committing the murders, Bundy said he felt as if he was possessed by "something ... awful and alien. There is just absolutely no way to describe first the brutal urge to do that kind of thing, and then what happens is once it has been more or less satisfied and recedes, you might say, or spent, that energy level recedes and basically I become myself again."

"But basically I was a normal person. I wasn't some guy hanging out at bars or a bum. I wasn't a pervert in the sense that people look at somebody and say, 'I know there is something wrong with him, you can just tell.' I was essentially a normal person," Bundy told Dobson. "The basic humanity and the basic spirit that God gave me was intact, but unfortunately became overwhelmed at times."

Ted Bundy acknowledged that he deserved the death penalty, even though there were anti-death penalty demonstrators outside his prison cell up until the moment of his execution. "I deserve the most extreme punishment society has," he said. "But I don't want to die, I kid you not."

STARKE, FL (FR) - He was once an assistant director of the Seattle Crime Prevention advisory committee and even wrote a pamphlet instructing women on rape prevention. A one-time Boy Scout with a promising career in Washington state politics, Ted Bundy appeared to be an example of a good, upstanding citizen. But behind the congenial facade lurked a force which landed him in an electric chair in January of this year.

Bundy said he began casually reading soft-core pornography when he was 12 or 13 years old. His friends found pornographic books in the garbage cans in his neighborhood: "From time to time we would come across pornographic books of a harder nature ... a more graphic, explicit nature than we would encounter at the local grocery store," he told Dobson in the taped interview. "But slowly throughout the years reading pornography began to become a deadly habit.

Dobson said that Bundy wept several times during the interview:

"He expressed great regret, remorse for what he had done, for the families that were hurting." He spent his last night in prayer with a minister from Gainesville, Florida.

Bundy's last words of confession and warning about pornography are an echo of statistics, research, and reports conducted within the last decade about the link between pornography and sexually violent crime. Unfortunately, many of the warnings in those reports still have not been heeded, and pornography has been taken for granted or considered a necessary evil.

According to a study conducted by a group of psychologists, Neil Malamuth of UCLA, Gene Abel of Columbia University, and William Marshall of Kingston Penitentiary, various forms of pornography can elicit fantasies which may lead to crime. Out of a test group of 18 rapists studied who used 'consenting pornography' to instigate a sexual offence, seven of them said that it provided a cue to elicit fantasies of forced sex.

A study released by the University of New Hampshire has proven that the states which have the highest readership of pornographic magazines such as Playboy and Penthouse also have the highest rape rates. The Michigan State Police department found that pornography is used or imitated in 41 percent of the sex crimes they have investigated.

The Free Congress Research and Education Foundation discovered that half of all rapists studied used soft core pornography to arouse themselves prior to seeking out a victim. Although researchers and media analysts may ballyhoo the impact of soft core pornography - claiming protection under the free speech provision of the Constitution - mounting evidence seems to be favoring a national crackdown on porn as a necessary means to stop crime.

In recent years, as more of this type of research has been published, significant gains have been made against pornographers as major retailers have removed porn from their shelves. Ted Bundy's confessions to Dr. James Dobson - a leader of the largest segment of pro-family forces in the U.S. - promises to fuel the nationwide efforts being made on the state and local levels to eliminate the pornography problem.

Bundy's Execution-Eve Interview with Dr. James Dobson

One of the most infamous sex criminals of all time is Ted Bundy. According to his own words, Bundy believed his descent into the horrible pit of sexual assault and murder was fueled by an addiction to violent obscenity. What makes Bundy's case of immense interest to evangelical Christians is an execution-eve interview conducted by Dr. James Dobson, president of Focus on the Family. This interview took place Monday, January 23, 1989, 2:30 P.M. EST, at the State Penitentiary in Starke, Florida. Bundy called Dobson and offered the interview with the understanding that it would be used to warn the public of how his horrible downfall actually took place.

February 3, 1998, MS-NBC reviewed the crimes and execution of Bundy on Jane Pauley's program Time and Again. At the end of the program, Pauley made brief reference to Dr. Dobson's interview and the link Bundy have made between obscenity and his murders. She remarked that this may have been just another Bundy scam.

There are several important points made during the interview, which are reinforced with five direct Bundy quotes:

Point 1: Bundy was not born a monster. He began life as a normal person.

". . . there was no physical abuse or fighting in the home. . . I led a normal life . . . "

Point 2: Obscenity is progressively addictive.

" . . . You reach that jumping off point where you begin to wonder if maybe actually doing it will give you that which is beyond just reading about it or looking at it . . . "

Point 3: There is a cause-and-effect relationship between using obscenity and criminal sexual behavior.

". . . I've met a lot of men who were motivated to commit violence just like me. And without exception, every one of them was deeply involved in pornography . . . "

Point 4: Bundy was eventually driven by an evil supernatural force. Although he never named this force as demon possession, his descriptions of it, and the obvious results, point to a classic case of intermittent (time-sharing) demon possession.

". . . have been possessed by something so awful and so alien, and then the next morning wake up from it, remember what happened . . .

Point 5: Despite the influences of obscenity and demonic forces, Bundy recognized his need to be accountable to society and God for his behavior.

". . . I deserve, certainly, the most extreme punishment society has and society deserves to be protected from me and from others like me, that's for sure."
