The Salvation Army may be able to provide free gas vouchers to qualified individuals in an emergency situation. Funding is limited, and the vouchers are only distributed in a limited number of situations. Other forms of transportation assistance may be provided as well, such as bus passes or car repairs.

 

The Salvation Army is a nationwide non-profit charity organization that can provide assistance to individuals and families regardless of their background or religion. However the low income, seniors, families with children and most disadvantaged are given priority. Most of the services they offer, including gasoline vouchers and transportation assistance, are to help people in emergency situations. In addition to offering financial assistance they will also offer provide counseling and longer term case management.

 

Free gas vouchers and general transportation assistance is offered by most Salvation Army centers. Only a small number of people who apply for this resource will receive it. First of all funding is very limited, and not all locations even offer this form of assistance. The price of gasoline also increases costs to the program, and therefore further limits the number of people who can receive help. Vouchers for gasoline are usually only offered if someone needs help getting to a job interview, school, medical appointment, or a job training program. If someone does need gasoline or transportation assistance, they usually need to formally apply, and this may require a face to face visit with a case manager. Applicants will typically need to provide proof of their crisis situation, and bring supporting documentation, such as copies of pay stubs and their household expenses. They will also usually need to be able to show why they need the gasoline or transportation assistance.

 

How to apply for gasoline vouchers

In general, the free gas vouchers and local bus tickets that are distributed by the Salvation Army are available on a very limited basis. Income qualified clients who need emergency assistance in getting to a job interview, doctor appointment, or to work or school are the main recipients of the gasoline vouchers. In addition, the Army may be able to assist with providing assistance for travel involving longer distances on a case-by-case basis. This help may be provided in the form of bus passes, money for gasoline, or free vouchers. This is usually offered in very special circumstances such as the death of an immediate family member or to reunite a child with their parents. Other forms of transportation assistance, such as help in paying for car repairs, may also be offered, but this is even much rarer and harder to obtain.

Salvation Army centers are also located in every state, and most major towns and counties in those states. As indicated, resources from this non-profit are very limited and not every location will offer transportation programs or gas vouchers. Locate Salvation Army centers.

 

Some branches provide the free gasoline vouchers as part of a program known as Emergency Family Services. This is the formal name of the Salvation Army emergency assistance program that may provide free bus passes or tokens and also gas money to those individuals in need of transportation assistance. Visit a social service office near you as an appointment is usually necessary to request transportation assistance or money.
