What is Goodwill Claim?

In the auto business, manufacturers will sometimes honor a warranty claim even if the warranty has expired, or didn't cover the problem. They do this as a matter of "goodwill" -- not because they have to (or don't think they have to), but because they want to keep the customer happy -- especially if it involves an expensive car.

An example: let's say your transmission is warrantied for five years or 50,000 miles, and yours breaks at five years and five days, with only 45,000 miles. Technically, the manufacturer doesn't have to honor your warranty claim, but as a matter of "goodwill," they probably would do so.
